Chinese Coccinellidae for Biological Control of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid: Description of Native Habitat

چکیده
The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand, is generally believed to be native to Asia and is known to occur in India, Japan, and China. In China, there are approximately four species of hemlock that grow in 14 provinces. We explored regions of the Southwestern Plateau in Yunnan, Sichuan, and Shaanxi Provinces for the adelgid and its natural enemies. The montaneforests of this region are largely in their natural state and noted for their biological diversity. We found the hemlock woolly adelgid in all three provinces and on each hemlock species examined (Tsuga dumosa (D. Don) Eichler, T. forrestii Downii, and T. chinensis (Franch.) Pritz.). More than 9 families of natural enemies were found in association with A. tsugae in China. One family, the Coccinellidae, is exceptionally diverse and seems to have an important role in maintaining the adelgid at low population densities. Of the 50+ species of lady beetles found on hemlock, at least 25 are new to science. Nine species are known to feed on HWA and three have been imported for further evaluation as biological control agents. The biodiversity of the lady beetles is discussed in relation to the habitat and climate of their native range compared with potential release sites in the United States.

Summary of Native and Established Predators of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid and the Balsam Woolly Adelgid (Homoptera: Adelgidae) in the Southeastern United States
There has been little research conducted on the effects of native or established predators on populations of the hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand, or the balsam woolly adelid, A. piceae Ratz. This paper reviews what is known about the native and established predators of both species in the southeast. Field surveys and cage exclusion experiments were used to examine the relationship...

Hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand (Homoptera: Adelgidae) is native to Japan where it is an innocuous inhabitant of Tsuga diversifolia Masters and T. sieboldii Carriere. Native populations of this insect are regulated by host resistance and natural enemies. However, introduced populations in eastern North America attain damaging levels on T. canadensis (L.) Carriere and T. carolinian...

Three sequential studies were conducted on the interacting effects of exposure to low (5°C) temperature for 0, 7, 28, 56, or 84 d followed by incubation at 10, 15, or 20°C on the egg diapause of Scymnus (Neopullus) camptodromus Yu and Liu (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). This beetle was imported from China as a potential biological control agent for hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae (Annand) ...
متن کاملComparison of numerical response and predation effects of two coccinellid species on hemlock woolly adelgid (Homoptera: Adelgidae).
The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand, is an introduced pest in North America that is native to Asia, and is causing extensive damage to eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis Carriere) and Carolina hemlock (Tsuga caroliniana Englemann) in the eastern United States. We compared two coccinellids imported for biological control of the adelgid: Scymnus ningshanensis Yu et Yao from China and...

We studied the adult ambulatory response of the predator, Laricobius nigrinus Fender (Coleoptera: Derodontidae), to odors from its prey, Adelges tsugae Annand, the hemlock woolly adelgid, and foliage of hemlock woolly adelgid, host hemlocks (Tsuga spp.), and other conifers. Both the predator and hemlock woolly adelgid are apparently native to western North America, but the predator is being re...
